“Crayons & Quiet Wonder”

A hush falls over the living room as the spine of the coloring book yawns open like a curtain, revealing blank kingdoms, white as snowfall, waiting to be named. I choose a crayon called “Sunset Peach,” still wearing its paper coat, the tip slightly blunted from last week’s castles. It smells of wax and possibility—the scent of childhood’s pocket-sized fireworks. First stroke: a river appears, awkward, shimmering, forgiving. Second stroke: the sky learns a new shade of afternoon. Soon, a carnival of colors parades across the page: Fern Green marches with
Cerulean and Dandelion, while shy Cotton Candy Pink sneaks in around the edges. I press harder, and the color grows bold, like a secret finally spoken. I press softer, and a whisper floats between valleys of paper grain. Errors become mountains, mountains become stories; nothing here is truly wrong. Outside, the grown-up world stretches in immaculate lines—traffic lights, deadlines, ledger sheets—straight as rulers. But in this two-page universe, a crooked sun can still rise, purple cows graze contentedly, and rain can fall upward just because I ask it to. By the time the last corner has surrendered its whiteness, my hands resemble small rainbows, and I have traveled farther than any map would dare suggest. I close the book. The room is ordinary again, but the ordinary now glows—as if the crayons secretly colored the air around me. And somewhere inside, a crinkled page keeps humming, reminding me that imagination is a door with no lock, hinged only to the heart.

Lyric

[Verse 1]
Kitchen table kingdom
Pages spread like Sunday news
You pick purple for the sky
I take green to color shoes
Little waxy soldiers
Rolling off the coffee cup
You laugh
“Stay in the lines”
Then scribble lightning tearing them up

[Chorus]
Coloring books
Crayons on the floor (oh-oh)
Hearts and houses
Spilling out the door
Every crooked shade
Tells the way we grew
Coloring books
Come alive with you

[Verse 2]
Broken paper wrappers
Rainbow dust on sticky hands
Dog’s got blue along his tail
From chasing castles in the sand
You draw stars on every margin
I give clouds funny hair
Fridge door turns to a gallery
With tape and crooked care

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
One day you’ll chase bigger dreams
Pens
Screens
Grown-up things
Keep a box of worn down sticks
For rainy days and simple wings
When the world feels lined and sharp
Too straight
Too sharp
Too new
Open up that old book
Let the colors run right through

[Chorus]
